Varadero Cooking Class: A Tour For The Foodies In Your Group

For those of you who have tried all the best restaurants in Varadero and want to take some Cuban recipes home with you, enroll in a Varadero Cuban cooking class. Where you’ll learn to make local delicacies and prepare mouth-watering cocktails!

Now, I need to put a disclaimer here. I’m not the cooking type and I have a tendency to cause kitchen fires, whenever I try to cook. But I did find the tour enjoyable and I (luckily) didn’t burn the building down, thanks to the expert guidance of the instructors.

Yet, for me, it was the cocktail making and the drinking of said cocktails that was the highlight of the tour. If you’re a foodie, you should consider taking this tour while in Varadero. It’s a lot of fun!

Can I Scuba Dive In Varadero?

Now, I’m not a scuba diver myself, but my friends are. And they do take scuba diving tours from Varadero. To go diving from Varadero, your easiest option is to take a tour to scuba dive Play Coral, located between Varadero and Matanzas, where you’ll dive the second largest barrier reef in the world.

A second option, is to head over to the Bay of Pigs on a full day scuba tour. And you can take scuba tours from Varadero to the Bay of Pigs. But you will need to have your dive certification, to take this tour.

How Do I Get From The Airport To The City In Varadero?

Varadero’s Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (VRA) is roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Varadero and is in the township of Matanzas. And it takes about 30 minutes in a car to reach Varadero, from the airport.

You should read my complete guide to transport options from the Varadero airport and book a transfer in advance of arriving in Varadero.

How Do I Transfer To Varadero From Havana?

For those of you who want to spend 48 hours or more in Havana, or are landing at Havana’s José Martí International Airport (HAV), you should read my guide on transfers between Havana and Varadero.

Havana is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Varadero. In a car, the journey takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. But on a bus, the journey is 4 hours or longer. Private car transfers are the most comfortable, convenient and fastest method to transfer from Havana to Varadero.

What Is The Best All-Inclusive Resort In Varadero?

Melia Internacional is where I often choose to stay. And I recommend it as one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. It’s also one of the newest resorts in Varadero.

I prefer to stay at the Melia in Varadero.

What Are The Best Restaurants In Varadero?

I’ve previously listed the top 10 best restaurants in Varadero. You should always venture outside your hotel to eat in Varadero. No matter which resort you’re in, the resort food is often quite terrible.

How Long Do I Need For A Vacation In Varadero?

What I consider the ideal length of time for a holiday in Varadero, is 3-7 days. With any more than a week in Cuba, you really should be traveling around and visiting other cities. But with only 2-3 days, you should focus on Varadero and its surrounds.

Now, cheap direct flights from Canada, Colombia, Mexico and the USA do exist. And the flight time is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Direct return flights can often be found for $200 to $300 USD. Which means for those of you looking for a cheap weekend getaway, to escape North American winter, Varadero is a good option.

Can I Visit Santa Clara From Varadero?

If you’ve got longer in Cuba, there are a host of interesting cities that you can visit, while basing yourself out of Varadero. Now, one of the more popular destinations that I get asked about, is Santa Clara, which is home to Che Guevara’s mausoleum complex.

While you can take an organized tour to Santa Clara from Varadero, the guides typically try to pack in too many destinations. And in doing so, they make for lousy tours where you’ll spend most of your time trapped on a tour bus.

My suggestion to you, if you want to visit Santa Clara from Varadero, is to organize a private car or transfer. And once in Santa Clara, then take a tour of the city. Because if you try to pack Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and Trinidad into a single day, you’re going to have a less than enjoyable day.

What Should I Pack For Cuba?

The two most important items to bring with you to Varadero, are a comprehensive travelers medical insurance plan that specifically covers Cuba. And a good VPN to access the internet.

Having travelers medical insurance that covers you in Cuba ,for the duration of your stay, is a requirement under Cuban law. Cuba’s Aduana (Customs or TSA) may ask to see it at the airport. If you don’t have insurance, they will make you buy their own expensive (and useless) Cuban insurance policy.

The second item, a VPN, is something you definitely need in Cuba. And in fact, you should not travel to Cuba without a VPN. A VPN will allow you to access the internet, like you do at home. Without a VPN, you will not be able to access most foreign websites, online banking, social media or messaging applications.
